ELLIOTT POWER
Power’s musical roots lie in the tastes of his parents, who separated when he was young. Living with his mum, he’d hear Massive Attack and Björk’s first albums, alongside Seal, Antony & The Johnsons and Portishead, while his dad would play him dub reggae and Chicago house when he saw him, giving him the early Fingers, Inc. records and passing on his love of Goldie and Metalheadz. His own interests moved onto garage, buying Sun City, Sidewinder and Telepathy tape packs, and feeding a love of grime by tuning into shows on Freeze and Laylow.
Moving forward Power was introduced to James Lavelle who collaborated on Power’s debut. “What James did was cultivate, inform and shape a whole community. Mo' Wax was an institution,” says Power, and ultimately it’s this holistic approach that Power sought to bring to his own work, right down to the “otherworldly” cover he created with revered fashion photographers Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones. “That's what I strive to do with Elliott Power as a project,” he says, “It's a whole world, it's a whole aesthetic.”
